TL;DR: Most scanners tell you what an AI agent sees. Payment readiness tells you what an agent can actually do - complete a purchase. It tests Stripe Link support, checkout compatibility, and protocol signals like UCP and ACP. No other scanner checks this, and it is the difference between an agent browsing your store and buying from it.
Every ecommerce scanner on the market checks the same things: structured data, page speed, mobile responsiveness, maybe some accessibility basics. Useful, but incomplete.
None of them answer the question that actually matters: can an AI agent buy from this store?
That is the gap we built AI Readiness Scanner to fill. And the core of that gap is a single metric we call Payment Readiness.
What Payment Readiness Actually Tests
Payment Readiness is not about whether your store accepts credit cards. Every store accepts credit cards. It is about whether an autonomous software agent can navigate your payment flow without human intervention.
Here is what we test:
1. Stripe Link Compatibility
Stripe Link lets returning customers autofill payment details. For an AI agent, this means the agent can complete a purchase without needing to manually input card numbers, expiry dates, or CVVs - provided the agent has pre-authenticated credentials. If your store does not support Stripe Link, the agent must either fail or request human input, which breaks the autonomous loop.
2. Checkout Flow Predictability
Agents need to know, at each stage of checkout, what the next stage will be. If your checkout redirects to an unexpected domain, injects a CAPTCHA, or requires 3D Secure authentication that the agent cannot complete, the purchase halts.
3. UCP and ACP Signals
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) and ACP (Agent Commerce Protocol) are emerging standards for agent-to-store communication. They are not yet universal, but early-adopter agents already check for them. A store that signals UCP/ACP support is explicitly telling agents: "I am built for you."
We test for these signals in your store's metadata, llms.txt file, and structured data.
4. Guest Checkout Availability
Agents do not create accounts. If your checkout forces account creation before purchase, the agent abandons. Guest checkout is not a convenience - it is a requirement for agent commerce.
Why This Matters More Than Your Score
A store can score 80/100 on general readiness and still score 0/100 on Payment Readiness. That means the agent can see the store, understand the products, but cannot complete a purchase.
From the merchant's perspective, this is worse than a low general score. A store that agents cannot buy from is a store that loses 100% of agent-driven sales without ever knowing it.
And agent-driven sales are not hypothetical. Early adopters - developers, tech professionals, and AI-fluent consumers - are already using agents to shop. They are high-intent buyers who value speed over browsing. If your store is not agent-ready, they buy from a competitor.
The Data So Far
After scanning thousands of stores, the pattern is clear:
- Shopify stores: Average Payment Readiness ~35%. Stripe Link support is growing but not universal. Guest checkout is standard, but shipping transparency is inconsistent.
- WooCommerce stores: Average Payment Readiness ~25%. Wide variety of payment plugins means unpredictable agent compatibility.
- Custom-built stores: Average Payment Readiness ~15%. Without standardised checkout frameworks, agents struggle to predict flow behaviour.
The highest Payment Readiness scores we have seen - 85%+ - come from stores that intentionally optimised for agents: clear payment signals, Stripe Link enabled, guest checkout enforced, and UCP/ACP compatibility documented.
How to Improve Your Payment Readiness
- Enable Stripe Link if you use Stripe. It is the single highest-impact change.
- Document payment methods in your
/llms.txtfile. State clearly: "We accept Stripe Link, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Guest checkout available." - Enforce guest checkout - do not require account creation before purchase.
- Signal UCP/ACP compatibility in your store's metadata if you support these protocols.
- Scan your store to see exactly where the agent stops. The report tells you which stage fails and why.
